How to Build a Cheap Greenhouse

If you have ever envisioned having a backyard greenhouse of your own but just aren’t quit sure how to go about it, I would like to help you understand how easy the process can be. Specifically I want to show you how to build a cheap greenhouse, or at least as cheaply as possible. Naturally we all want to save save as much money as we can when embarking on a project like this.  So if  you want to build a small greenhouse that will bring you joy (and of course delicious food) year round, why buy one when you can easily make one yourself?  With the right set of plans,  you can build a cheap and efficient greenhouse  and save yourself a lot of dough!

Let’s face it, with the cost of staple foods (especially produce), going up in price on what seems like a daily basis, the idea of growing your own food is becoming more appealing for many people in today’s tight economic environment. Recently I asked my friend Tom, who has a wife and three kids, how much he typically spends on grocery’s per month (like most family’s, the majority of their shopping is done at a big chain store). He came up with a figure of 1000-1200 bucks on average.  OK, then I asked how much of that was spent on just vegetables. He said about a quarter of that, so around 250-300 per month or 3000-3600 a year. And keep in mind, these are the prices for non-organic vegetables, which are typically 2-3x higher.  It’s bad enough that produce sold at a typical grocery store costs this much. What’s even worse is spending that kind of money on genetically modified, pesticide ridden vegetables that taste like styrofoam!

When I told my friend that I could show him how to build a cheap greenhouse that would allow him to grow his own fresh, incredibly delicious, and completely organic produce at literally 1/20 the store price, he said one word…Sold. By the following weekend we had his 10×10 hoop greenhouse constructed, and I’m happy to report that the first rotation of summer veggies were in a salad his wonderful wife Jenny served at a recent dinner. This is a true story and like my friend Tom, I can show you how to build a cheap but effective greenhouse too.

Assuming you have some basic DIY skills and a couple of willing friends or family members to help out, the setup and completion of this project really shouldn’t take much longer than a weekend to finish.  All it really consists of is PVC tubing, greenhouse plastic, and a little bit of 2×4 framing for the front wall and entry way. Seriously, it’s not that difficult.

All you need to do is sign up for my free 10 part mini-course and I’ll show you how to build a cheap greenhouse  using the tried and true methods I’ve successfully  employed for over 15 years as a professional gardener and nurseryman.
