Retractable awnings for patios, porches, and decks offer a sensible solution for outdoor shade. Screened-in enclosures, alternatively, while they provide protection from sun, rain, and other weather conditions, do not offer much flexibility, which many homeowners seek. Retractable awnings allow you to modify the degree of sun exposure and shade you’d like, and adjusting them is often fast, requiring little effort. Knowing a little more about retractable awnings can help you make the best decision when it’s time to purchase.

Retractable awnings are either manually operated or motorized. One of the more obvious advantages of manually operated retractable awnings is that they require no electricity to operate. If an electrical outlet is not conveniently located near the awning, it doesn’t matter. These awnings come with a hand crank that should allow you to fully open the awning quietly and smoothly in less than a minute. Motorized retractable awnings, alternatively, come with a specialized motor and remote control which allows you to easily open and close the awning from the comfort of your lounge chair or even from inside your home. They plug into any standard outlet, so a visit from the electrician is not required if an outlet is located close by. The clear advantage of motorized awnings is that they offer convenience, but they may also be the best choice for homeowners who have physical limitations which might make it difficult to use a hand crank.

Generally speaking, retractable awnings, whether manually operated or motorized, should be able to attach to most types of siding, including vinyl, brick, stucco, aluminum, wood, and masonry. They should also be able to affix to either an eave or overhang or to the outside wall of your house. While retractable awnings can be installed by any homeowner familiar with tools, it is generally a good idea to hire someone with prior experience to complete the installation. This will cost a little more, of course, but the extra cost will be worth it because it will save you from likely frustration and hassle.

Also important to consider is the fabric that comes standard with retractable awnings. Insist on only the highest quality, most rugged outdoor fabric with superior UVA and UVB sun protection. Additionally, awning fabric should be waterproof, resistant to mildew, and easy to clean. Choosing lower quality fabrics at first will cause you unavoidable regret later on because poor quality fabrics tend to fade and wear quickly and are expensive to replace.

Lastly, accessories for retractable awnings, while they may be an additional expense, should be available to purchase so that you can customize your awning to make it more comfortable and better able to protect you from weather. A wireless wind sensor is a practical accessory to consider adding on for motorized retractable awnings if you happen to live in an area that experiences occasional high winds. The sensor will automatically close the motorized awning if winds become strong enough to potentially damage it. Another helpful accessory is a screen panel that connects to the side or front of manually operated or motorized retractable awnings to offer even more protection from rain, sun, wind, or other weather conditions. Yet another practical accessory is an awning cover that protects retractable awnings when they are closed and not in use. The cover helps keep awnings clean and free of dirt, cobwebs, leaves, and other debris.

Knowing a few details goes a long way when it comes to making significant purchases for your home. Even though retractable awnings offer superior outdoor shade for less money and less effort than a screened-in enclosure, it is still important to take some time to understand the product before buying. Knowing what to look for and what to insist upon in retractable awnings will allow you to make the best possible choice. When a decision is made with care, the choice you make is always the best one.

Planning a greenhouse can be a relatively easy experience if you keep a few essential considerations in mind. Greenhouse gardening requires constant vigilance. In order to make things easier on you, there are a few things you might want to add to your completed greenhouse.

Watering

The first is watering. It is essential to bring a water source into your greenhouse. Otherwise you will be lugging gallons of water in by hand to keep things watered properly or you will be dragging a hose across your yard and garden constantly. Once you have a water source, an option to consider is adding an automatic watering system. There are misting systems, drip irrigation, and sprinklers available.

Ventilation and Heat Control

Greenhouses attract heat. That is the whole idea, especially in the cooler months of the year. However, heat can build up too much. Stale air also is bad for the plants. It is essential to have proper ventilation for your greenhouse with vents and even fans. When building your greenhouse, make sure you add adequate venting on all sides with good control. You will need to adjust venting daily to keep air flowing and heat from building too high in the warmer months.

When the cooler evening air comes, the venting needs to be closed down to keep heat within the greenhouse. Some veteran greenhouse growers add heating elements to their greenhouses to extend the growing season well into the winter months. Gas heaters are something to consider when building your greenhouse.

Shelving

Unless your greenhouse is not much more than an insulated cold frame, you will want shelving for your plants. Open slat shelves allow air to circulate and keep the plants off the ground. It also allows excess water to drain off. Traditional shelving is made from wooden slats. Some gardeners prefer plastic coated metal shelves for ease of cleaning and longevity. Either works very well.

Controlling the inside temperatures in your greenhouse is crucial for making plants thrive, and heating a greenhouse properly can mean the difference between an outrageous, or manageable heating bill . In this article we’re going to talk about some excellent ways to do just that. Heat is the delight of plants or the cooker of them. It is important to get heat into your greenhouse to keep the plants warm and growing right.

You can regulate the amount of warmth in your greenhouse in many ways. Many gardeners depend on fans and heaters and you might need to do that as well. However, to keep your costs down, trapping heat and using it later should on your list of options. To do this, you might consider adding thermal storage to your greenhouse.

What is thermal storage?

Thermal storage is a general term that refers to storing energy for later usage. It is like charging up a battery so you can use the power in the battery later when you don’t have access to other forms of power. The same idea applies to thermal storage in a greenhouse, except you are storing heat instead of power. Gathering heat and letting it out later allows you to regulate the amount of heat in the greenhouse
space.

Some thermal storage options for your greenhouse are easy to put in and relatively cheap.

Water is an excellent thermal storage option. Put water in thirty-gallon barrels painted black. The black paint helps the water absorb the heat. When the sun lowers, the heat emanates from the drum and keeps the heat in the greenhouse space longer.

Rock and stone are other great options.

Another way to bring thermal storage in is building the greenhouse with one side into a hill. The ground absorbs heat throughout the day and will gradually release it throughout the night. Thinking about these things will help you construct the greenhouse you always wanted.

Let me ask you a question – What is keeping you from building your own greenhouse? Are you still confused on whether to buy a ready-made greenhouse from your favorite garden store or how to construct a greenhouse yourself from scratch? Maybe you’ve had some trouble getting your hands on a good set of small greenhouse plans in the past. Well, here is a list of things to consider before jumping into a greenhouse construction project.

1. Choose the design that fits your budget. You wouldn’t want to overspend on your greenhouse, right? There are budget-friendly designs that you could buy; though you can really save much if you build your own. Raw materials are much cheaper. But if budget is not an issue, then choose the design that makes you feel at ease. It is that design in the gardening store that seems to be screaming “Buy me! Buy me!” Anyway, building your own greenhouse is a dream come true.

2. Choose the kind of plants you want grown in your greenhouse. Do you want to plant tomatoes or cabbage or carrots? The kind of plants that you will plant will determine the kind of greenhouse design you need to have. There are some plants that have very specific needs. Some of them may not grow if planted on the same bed with other plants. These are special considerations that need to be addressed before the actual planting. You want your plants to grow well, right?

3. Lastly, ask yourself this: Do I really want a greenhouse? It is important that you have the desire to take care of plants. It is impossible to grow healthy plants if you are not really into gardening. You don’t want to waste money on something that you cannot really keep in good condition, right?

The purpose of the greenhouse is to create an ecosystem wherein the plants can grow well. Beyond that, it’s simply for the love of plants. Get to know more about how to construct a greenhouse from the ground up, building plans and what they could do for you. Check out the Free build your own greenhouse mini-course available on this site, and let me show you how easy and cheaply it can be to make a garden greenhouse yourself.

Has the prospect of making a greenhouse of your own always appealed to you but you felt that you just couldn’t afford one? Well, I’m here to tell you that nothing could be further from the truth! Greenhouses that are very cheap and are easy to build have been made available in the market. And it has been made available just for plant lovers like you.

So where do you start? The first step in building a greenhouse is the planning. You have to plan out the kind of greenhouse that you want to have. While doing such, you have to consider the available space that you have in your backyard. Several modern greenhouse designs make it possible for people who live in more modern homes to have their own greenhouse. These designs are usually very small that they can fit the small free spaces in an apartment building or a condominium.it’s

The next thing to consider in the planning process involves location. Just as in the real estate world, it’s all about location, location, location! You’ll want to make sure to place your structure in a spot that gets a maximum amount of winter sun. So take a little time to scout out your yard and determine where your new greenhouse will receive the most light while facing in a northward direction during this time of year. Take into consideration that the angle of the sun during the day is lower in the winter too.

After considering the space, the next is to consider the kind of plants that you’d like to grow. To help you decide, you might want to make a list of the reasons why you want to have a greenhouse? Is it to save money on vegetable and fruit expenses? Is it to give way to your innermost desire to grow plants? Or is it both? Whichever your reason may be, the plants that you need to grow are those that you can benefit from.

Keeping a greenhouse of your own does not only make you feel more relaxed in your own home, but it also makes you live a healthier lifestyle. Growing your own fruits and vegetables makes you save money on those goods as well as eat stuff that is very much organic.

Are you one of those people who think that building a greenhouse of your own just isn’t for you? Perhaps you’re under the impression that you need vast amounts of carpentry experience or an advanced engineering degree to succeed in this task. Well, you better think again! Nothing is hard if you have a passion in doing it, and you absolutely can begin building a greenhouse cheap today if you choose to. If you check out the things that you need, you might just realize that you are just as fit to build your own greenhouse as as anyone is.

· You don’t really need to be an expert builder to build one. All you really need is a good set of plans to show you the step by step process of how to set it up. Although it would be helpful if you know how to use some basic tools like a cordless drill, rubber mallet and a hand saw, beyond those basics there’s really not much else required in terms of technical skill.

· The location of your greenhouse will determine the size of it as well as the plants that can grow in it. It is important that the space you have chosen for it gets a lot of sun, ideally the whole day, so that the plants can grow well. Plants would also need a good supply of clean water as well as proper ventilation.

· Which greenhouse design are you working on? Is it the big old Victorian style, a lean to greenhouse or a PVC greenhouse? Whichever you may decide, make sure that it could very well fit the area you have allotted.

· The materials of course will depend on the chosen design as well as the working budget. I highly recommend that you buy materials that could really last and withstand different weather conditions. This will benefit you in the long run.

Do you want to know how to construct a greenhouse without spending much? No, this is not a trick question. Hopefully in this short article I can convince you just how simple and fun the process can be to do yourself.

Wouldn’t it be rewarding to build your own greenhouse? I have always loved growing vegetables myself and I used to think that having my own backyard greenhouse was too complicated. I tried looking at gardening stores and most of the ready-made greenhouses cost an arm and a leg. In fact, it covers several greenhouse designs that you might want to consider depending on the amount of space that you have and the budget your able to work with (of course the advantage to making your own greenhouse is that all of the available options are reasonable from a cost point of view).

Aside from the joys of building your own greenhouse, the satisfaction that you feel when the greenhouse has been built can’t be bought. In the process of planning, you also need to choose the plants. It would be better if the plants you choose to grow are those that you really like. This amazing mini-course is just great because it also includes a list of the plants that are really great to grow in your greenhouse.

In any greenhouse you plan to build, it shouldn’t be merely about the design that you have chosen, but it is essential that it creates a healthy ecosystem where the plants can grow naturally.

I’ll bet that you are enjoying the first greenhouse that you have built. Greenhouses are not only for plants – with the right amount of space, they could also be a good room where people could enjoy breakfast or a good cup of coffee. So, are you thinking of building another greenhouse?

If you are, then you might as well try building a wooden greenhouse. Wooden greenhouse plans and designs are not really new anymore. People have built wooden greenhouses for centuries already; though technology has presented them with more modern designs using other base materials. Over the years, wooden greenhouses have continued to be a favorable greenhouse design for some; yet the number of enthusiasts continues to grow.

You will need to choose lumber. And then purchase the other supplies as well as the tools you may also need. But before you do any purchases, it is important to get hold of a book that will serve as your guide as to how many items you need to purchase and the exact tools you might need so you know exactly what to buy. This does not only save you time, but it will save you a lot of money as well.

And I know just the perfect resource to help you build your wooden greenhouse. This 100% FREE mini-course comes conveniently in your email, and makes the learning process simple and fun! Click here for more information on how to get your free copy now!

Do you have a green thumb? Do you like to grow plants? Then, perhaps it’s about time that you decide to make a greenhouse for your own garden. I’m happy to report that in recent years, more and more people have begun to build their own backyard greenhouses. This is their answer to the call to be healthy, live healthy and do their part to clean up the environment on a local level!

Greenhouses are not just something in the backyard. A lot of schools have built their own as a contribution to the call to go green and be healthy. Some have taught their students the proper way to garden and to grow plants the organic way. In this way, they are not only teaching them how to garden but they are already teaching them how they could live a healthier lifestyle.

The greenhouses of the future will be mini. They have gone small not because people allot lesser space for growing plants but because people who live in modern houses that do not enough space for a real garden will decide to grow plants as well. These are the people who live modern lifestyles but will decide to go organic and the best way to do that is to plant their own vegetables and fruits. It will save them a lot on food costs and at the same time make them healthy.

The greenhouses of the future will have adapted to the more modern lifestyle but keep its essence of being one with nature. It will not just be for the old folks, but kids and teens will also be actively involved in gardening. This is exciting stuff and could be the start of something big and great for the overall health of many individuals and for the environment.

And the beautiful part of this whole thing is that it’s really easy to build a backyard greenhouse yourself. You don’t need to hire contractor, or invest in an expensive prefabricated greenhouse kit. You can literally make one yourself for a few hundred bucks. And I’m not talking about building a flimsy piece of junk either! I’m talking about setting up a homemade greenhouse that will perform incredibly well for years to come.

I’ve shown countless individuals and family’s how to do it and I can do the same for you…for Free! No gimmicks here. Simply sign up for my 100% Free ‘Build a Garden Greenhouse’ mini course and I’ll show you step by step how to construct one the cheap and easy way. Hope to see ya there, and never forget the most important rule of greenhouse gardening – HAVE FUN!

Now that you are in the process of building a greenhouse, it is time to decide what kind of greenhouse growing you want to do. The type of crops or plants you want to start growing for yourself and family. Your greenhouse allows you all sorts of flexibility in what you want to cultivate, which is the really cool part of having a greenhouse!

Fruits and vegetables need the most care of all. In order to grow fruits and vegetables, there must be plenty of sunlight, ventilation, heat, proper moisture, etc. You must also constantly watch out for pests.

When growing vegetables in a greenhouse, normally you create a bed for them to grow in. These beds must have proper drainage to get rid of the extra water.

You can prepare crops early by planting seeds between the autumn and winter. This way your vegetables can be ready by early spring. Herbs are also known to grow well in greenhouses during the winter.

In warm greenhouses, you can start growing tomatoes during the late winter. Other vegetables like cucumbers and peppers can start being grown in the early spring. Chili peppers seeds can start being planted in the spring.

Beans, squash, melons, green onions, radishes, and beets are also known to do well in greenhouses. Fruit trees can also be grown in greenhouses. Seeds for fruit trees are able to germinate around a 55 degree Fahrenheit temperature.

Make sure everything is ripe before picking them! Happy gardening

Q: Are small greenhouses better?

A: When considering building a small greenhouse remember to keep in mind that, the smaller your greenhouse, the more rapid the temperature fluctuations it faces. The air volume inside a smaller greenhouse is lower while the exposed area that allows heat exchange, or loss-gain ratio is comparatively large. As a result , the air temperature changes rapidly and needs to be regulated frequently. So be sure to add sufficient ventilation areas into the structure to accommodate this need.

Q: Where should I situate my greenhouse?

A: It’s best to choose a direction that precludes cold winter winds and to pick a site in your garden that compliments the light requirements for the kinds of plants or veggies you want to grow. Also make sure to locate the greenhouse relatively close to sources of heat, water, and electricity. This will save you lots of headaches down the road. It’s also important to pick a location that has either good natural drainage or where drainage can be installed with relative ease.

Q: What Are the Uses of Cold, Cool, Warm, or Hot Greenhouses?

A: These terms refer to the nighttime temperatures that are maintained in the greenhouse using heating or cooling methods where appropriate.

A cold greenhouse is only sun heated in winter and usually the temperature doesn’t fall below 28 degrees. This temperature is to low for plants to grow successfully. However, you can over-winter plants that are not frost sensitive.

Cool greenhouses are heated by various means to maintain a minimum temperature of 45 degrees. At this temp., you can over-winter all frost sensitive plants. Still, at this temperature very little plant growth will occur.

It is the warm greenhouse that is the star attraction to a gardening enthusiast! At a minimum temperature of 55 degrees, a wide variety of plants, including vegetables, can be grown successfully during the winter.

Hot greenhouses can be used to grow a number of exotic varieties of plants which need consistently high heat to flourish. This is an expensive proposition in places that experience long winters as the cost of heating could burn a big hole in your pocket!

Q: How does climate affect my greenhouse design?

A: The kind of weather you face throughout the year has an important bearing on the kind of greenhouse structure you choose.

If you face cold winters, go for a design with a steeply sloped roof and sturdy sidewalls to which insulation may be attached when needed.

For snowy or cold windy regions, solar greenhouses would provide great insulation and heat in the most economical way. Solar heating is an excellent choice to limit the cost of heating using electricity.

A windy region demands additional strengthening of the structure to withstand the force of the wind when it hits. You should strongly consider an attached greenhouse option as they provide superior structural strength and shelter against the wind.

If torrential rains and heavy leaf fall plague your area, a steep A-frame greenhouse would be an ideal option.

Also, rainy areas with low light intensity would be ideal for attached greenhouse structures. you would have ready access to electricity to provide artificial lighting. You will have no trouble accessing the greenhouse from an internal doorway thereby avoiding getting soaked and trailing mud into your house.

For warm regions, you should be sure to place vents close to the ground as they will help greatly in regulating temperature and keeping the house well ventilated.

If you are in a hot region, build a greenhouse that is structurally amenable to putting up screens and shades to control light intensity as well as excessive heat build-up.

Here are some commonly asked questions I am routinely asked about personal backyard greenhouses. They’re not
nearly as hard to set-up as many folks seem to think!

1. Would you recommend larger or smaller greenhouses?

If your greenhouse is smaller, expect to deal with temperature fluctuation. This means you will have to spend more time dealing with ventilation and insulation management when dealing with smaller greenhouses. But running larger greenhouses are more costly. You will need to do a cost-benefit analysis from your end when deciding what type of greenhouse to build.

2. How do I grow organic herbs in my greenhouse?

There is certified organic mixtures that you can buy from your local stores. You are not allowed to use synthetic fertilizing when growing organic herbs. There is also a specific pH level of the prepared organic mixture as well. Typically the pH of the mix is at a 6 or 7.

3. What kind of electric heater do you recommend for the greenhouse?

I would recommend a 2kW or 3 kW air heater. If you use heaters with a larger wattage, it may damage your plants. Find a heater that has multiple strengths and unheated air options as well.

4.If I’m going on vacation, how can I make sure my plants still get the water it needs?

There are commercial automatic watering system products that run on batteries. Sometimes asking a friendly neighbor helps as well.

5. Can I grow anything in my greenhouse?

You can only grow plants that your greenhouse is catered for. Simply having a protection from cold does not guarantee the success of your plants. There are many other variables and it may require some trial and error on your part as well.

6. What kind of greenhouses do you recommend for each type of climate?

I recommend greenhouses having a steep slope roof if you live in an area with cold winters. For windy climates, I highly recommend a strong framework using wood or aluminum and glass for the covering. If you live in a warm area, I recommend vents near the floor to help prevent overheating within the greenhouse. And if you live in a very hot region, it may even be worth considering tinted glass.

When it comes to building your own greenhouse, there are some things that you should take into consideration before jumping into the project. While constructing a small, personal greenhouse is generally a fairly simple undertaking, lack of proper planning can really hamper your progress.

For this reason, one of the first steps you will want to take is a simple visit to a local nursery; you will want to do this for several reasons. Primarily, this will allow you to get a clearer idea of what you wish to grow (if you don’t have some ideas already), you’ll also be able to check out the latest do-it-yourself greenhouse kits, and may be able to find some really inexpensive blueprints or plans for a “from-scratch” model. Personally, I think building your own greenhouse this way is ideal.

It ‘s not as hard as you may think (with the help of a few family members or friends, you can easily build one from stat to finish in a weekend), and it is by far the cheapest route. I made a 10×10 house last summer for $200 in materials, and it works beautifully!

Secondly, you are going to have to determine the location of your new greenhouse. If you have the space, you may be able to build larger stationary structure; however, those with more limited geographical area may be better served by a smaller, portable version. Again, this works especially well if you are planning on a scaled-down design.

If you have decided to go for a larger, stationary structure, one of your best bets for free or inexpensive blueprints may be a simple search engine query. There are literally thousands of websites devoted to gardening, and hundreds of those that actually specialize in do-it-yourself projects such as how to build own greenhouse. With a larger scale design, chances are you are going to have to pick up most of your supplies at a home improvement or hardware store; at least the lumber.

Depending on the size and location of the greenhouse, and whether or not it is going to have a permanent foundation, you may have to go through the process of getting building permits from your city, and may even have to schedule inspections of the building as it is constructed.

After you have gotten the structural aspects of your dream greenhouse in order, you are going to have to determine what you are going to do about plumbing and electrical. Smaller, indoor units can generally get by with daily watering and perhaps grow lights and misters, which can easily be set up inside your home with your existing wiring. However, if you are planning a larger outdoor structure, you may want to consider something a little more complex.

For instance, if you are intending to utilize your newly designed greenhouse to grow hundreds or even thousands of plants, you may want to invest in such conveniences as an automatic watering system, humidifiers, heaters, and/or automated lighting. While these items may sound complex, many such systems are designed to be installed by do-it-yourselfers.

It is simply a matter of utilizing the correct product for your needs and (perhaps more importantly) your skill level. Alternatively, you may want to keep your project simple, leaving room in your design to allow for future upgrading.

To see how easy and cost effective it can be to build a backyard greenhouse of your own, I encourage you to sign up for my Free 10-part mini-course. In it I show you a step by step method for how to plan and construct a hobby greenhouse that will produce plants and veggies year round. Happy gardening!

No matter what type of greenhouse you are planning to set up, picking the correct greenhouse building materials will make all the difference in the world. We’ll review all the materials you will need in this article.

Structural Greenhouse Materials

The first thing you need to get is the structural materials. You will need non-heat conducting timber, steel, and aluminum alloys. I would not recommend plastic piping because it is not sturdy and it cannot handle the wind as well as steel can. Aluminum is a better option since it is rust-resistant and it is easy to assemble.

Going with a wooden framework has its advantages and disadvantages as well. A wooden framework is easy to work with and is very aesthetic. Wood is also good at preventing heat loss during cold weather seasons. However wood is vulnerable to pests such as termites.

PVC pipes are commonly used for smaller greenhouses, especially if you plan to use polyethylene to cover it.

Covering Material

There are multiple options of covering materials for a greenhouse. You can use glass, fiberglass, plastic film, polycarbonate panels, etc. It is best to match your choice of frame with the covering materials.
For example, when sunlight is reduced during the winter months, it is better to have a covering material that has strong transmission capabilities while having a framework that is conducive to absorption.

The good thing about using glass is that it allows direct transmission of light and reduces heat loss. However there is a risk of shattering and installation costs are pretty high. The disadvantage of glass is that it retains heat and causes the internal environment to heat very quickly. This is why having a framework with proper ventilation is extremely necessary when using glass. Glass has a life span of 25 years or more.

Polycarbonate is easy to bend and is not as flammable as plastic material. Polycarbonate also has solid transmission of light capabilities and has a life span of over 15 years or more.

Lighting

Choosing the right lighting depends on the types of plants you want to grow. You will need to spend some time figuring out what type of plants you want to grow and choose the lights around that.

There are several types of lighting systems on the market today. There is High Intensity Discharge (HID), Metal-Halide (MH), and High Pressure Sodium (HPS) lights. Each of these types emit light at different colors of the spectrum: HID emits light in the blue spectrum, HPS in the red-orange, and MH in the blue spectrum. The blue spectrum is good for growth and the red-orange spectrum is good for budding.

Insulation Materials

There is several types of insulation methods for your greenhouse. One of the most effective types of insulation is polyurethane boards and polystyrene boards. If you place these on the end walls and sides, it will help keep the greenhouse warm during the winter. I have seen people put bags of drive leaves and straw outside of the greenhouse walls to keep the place warm as well. Using thermal blankets as curtains for the greenhouse is another useful option.

To find out how to make a high quality hobby greenhouse yourself at a fraction of the typical cost you should sign up for my Free in depth mini-course on the subject. It’s packed full of valuable information and a step by step plan on how to build an awesome backyard greenhouse that will produce fresh plants and vegetables for years to come.

A really simple greenhouse for your garden would be the cold frame greenhouse variety suited to your own backyard. The cold frame greenhouse, sun boxes and and hotbeds are relatively inexpensive options. They are especially great when you want to grow cool weather crops in the early spring, fall, and even into the winter months.

They work well for early plantings of summer annuals and seeds, faster rooting of cuttings, starting perennials from seeds in summer, and protecting delicate plants in the winter.

The advantage of a cold frame greenhouse and sunboxes is that being solar greenhouses they do not need supplemental energy to heat them. You would need to ensure proper ventilation during hot summer days to keep your plants from overheating.

The design of of a cold frame greenhouse has a southward facing orientation with an opaque covering and insulating north reflecting wall, and removable glazing. Cold frames work by trapping the sun’s heat during the day and also retain heat radiated by the soil during the cooler night.

Modern design of cold frames increase efficiency by including excellent insulation as well as movable insulation. The ladder is folded up during the day, but is pulled down at night or in cold weather. Other ideas for heat retention are the use of water filled barrels painted black that are good absorbers of heat from the sun. They passively radiate heat back into the greenhouse environment at night due to the temperature differential.

Almost all “problems” with greenhouse building plans can be traced to two factor, lack of detail and clarity.

You see, building a greenhouse is easy if you plan right. It’s because you can easily prepare from the very beginning.
And if already started, don’t sorry. It’s better that you’re finding out now, so you can take action as soon as possible.

Your choice of greenhouse is where it all begins…and choosing right can make your life easier.

After you decide that you want to build a greenhouse, you have to next decide what type to build. This should not be a difficult one to address, provided you know what kinds of plants you want to grow. You will need to answer questions such as:

-What will my greenhouse be principally used for?

-Do I want a large or small greenhouse?

-Will the greenhouse be the main attraction of my garden?

-Is my garden exposed to strong winds?

-Are there young children or wild animals in the area?

Factors such as cost and space will determine the type of greenhouse you build. If you do live in a windy area, it may be worth to spend the extra money for a solid and sturdy greenhouse.

If you live near a large hardware store or a nursery, or even a do-it-yourself home center, go and visit some models. The customer service representative should be able to provide you with valuable information before you make a final decision.

By following the above guidelines, you’ll be taking the first steps towards creating an optimal environment for your garden.

Of course, there is a lot more to it, that I couldn’t possibly lay out the entire guide in this email.

You can find out exactly what you do need by checking out my ultimate greenhouse building plans email course. It’s a FREE 10-part mini-course that will guide you, step by step, towards setting up a backyard greenhouse of your own. From how to select the proper location to actual blueprint plans and a detailed explanation for it’s construction. Happy Gardening!

Polycarbonate is an increasingly popular choice for greenhouse coverings due to it’s many desirable features. It is very strong with high impact value, hail proof, clear to allow excellent transmission of light, reasonably flexible so that it can be bent, and is less flammable than other plastic materials. Simply put, a polycarbonate greenhouse gives you a lot of bang for the buck.

You’ll find it comes available in single, double, or a triple wall structured sheet. The single wall polycarbonate sheets are available as corrugated sheets in a matte or clear variety. The polycarbonate rolls available for a hobby greenhouse already come with a coating of material that greatly reduces the dripping of moisture as well, which is beneficial for reducing the number of pests that can potentially take up residence.

Polycarbonates tend to expand or contract with temperature changes and installation must be done accordingly to allow for this feature. The single sheet variety can be installed with screws and rubber gaskets, while the multiple-layered sheets can be secured to the frame with aluminum extrusions. Aluminum tape is used to seal the top and bottom of the sheet to prevent entry of dust, insects or algae. Polycarbonate sheets also score over plastic films in their estimated life span which is around 15 years or more as compared to plastic films for which it is around four years. Glass, of course, outlives both at a life span of about 25 years.

There are literally hundreds of greenhouse types that you can build. In this article, I will primarily focus on the most common greenhouses to build.

If space is limited in your backyard, you may want to consider a Lean-To greenhouse (also known as a half-greenhouse). This is when the greenhouse’s ridge line is attached to your garage or the side of your house. A major advantage of this type of greenhouse is that it has easier access to heat and electricity.

An Ever-Span Greenhouse: is one of the most popular. It is a stand-alone and almost looks like a miniature house. This is one of the largest types of greenhouses and are limited by the length of the material that you end up buying. Generally ever-span greenhouses have dimensions of 6 feet by 12 feet.

Barn Style Greenhouses: has walls that are upright and has a lot more headroom than a typical greenhouse. Barn style greenhouses either have slanted or straight walls. The straight walls are more conducive for vent placement. Side slanted barn style greenhouse walls makes collecting sunlight easier for plants.

Hoop greenhouses: These are quite possibly the easiest and cheapest kind to build. Essentially, a hoop or pvc style greenhouse requires little more than a frame made out of connected pvc tubing, a sturdy plastic sheeting material, and a simple wood frame entry for the front door. Typically a hoop style house with dimensions measuring 10×10 or so can easily be built for under $500, which is an incredible deal considering what you’ll get out of these little plant factories.

A-Frame Greenhouses: These greenhouses get their name from having an A-shape. The nice thing about A-frame greenhouses is that they can be built into sections before the final product is constructed. A-Frame greenhouses have straight walls and a slanted roof. The slanted roof makes it easier to get rid of snow when compared to other greenhouses. However heating up A-Frame greenhouses can be expensive since there are higher ceilings.

To learn how to build a backyard greenhouse of your own, I encourage you to sign up for my free 10-part mini-course. In it i show you how to plan and construct a hobby greenhouse that can set up easily and cheaply. Happy Gardening.

Lean-to:

When space is limited, an attached greenhouse can be a great option. A lean-to’s ridge line is connected to the side of the home or garage and ideally has a doorway leading into the building. As they abut the main structure of the home, lean-to greenhouses have easy access to electricity, water, and heat.

The height of the lean-to would obviously be limited by the supporting wall it abuts. Also, the supporting wall may hinder sunlight. You have to remain vigilant during the winter months when snow or ice can slide off of the main structure of the house onto the lean-to.

Accessibility, lower cost and easy heating are the main advantages of a lean-to greenhouse. These houses come with either a straight eave or curved eave design.

Ridge Greenhouses:

These are attached by a common gutter only at the lower edges or eaves of the roof. In order to increase efficiency and maintain continuity by increasing the area under the greenhouse canopy, there is no division of the structure by an inner wall. The roofs of these greenhouses can be either curved or gabled. The curved arches are preferred where flexible and lighter materials such as polyethylene should be used. The gabled roof generally uses heavier materials like glass or fiberglass.

Even Span Greenhouses:

An even span structure is another great attached greenhouse option. It is a very graceful structure and can be connected to the house or stand on it’s own. In the attached variety, it has one gable end connected to the wall of another building. It is usually the largest of the garden greenhouses and can be lengthened as desired, which is a great feature moving into the future. This is of significant value if you’re on a fixed budget to start with, but then later want to expand and make the house bigger. It has the capacity to hold two to three benches for crop production and beats the lean-to in availability of usable space as well as having a better shape and size to maintain optimal temperature and ventilation.

An efficient even span greenhouse would have dimensions of 6-12 feet in width and length respectively.

Window Mounted Greenhouse:

These are the smallest of all the greenhouse enclosures available and are great for hobbyists. They are window mounted and contain two or three shelves that can accommodate a few choice plants. These are relatively low cost and require very time and effort on your part.

To learn more about how to plan and build a wonderful greenhouse of your own I encourage you to sign up for my Free 10-part mini-course on the right side of this page. In it I show you step by step how to set one up for much less than you’ll spend on a kit or contractor. Happy Gardening!

A greenhouse for beginners can be a simple as a pvc frame and plastic sheeting, or a wood frame and glass covered structure. Either one will provide a setting for gardening enthusiasts who want to produce fresh quality crops throughout the year, despite the weather. The beauty of owning a greenhouse of your own is that they are able to heat up because of all of the incoming solar radiation from the sun that is absorbed by plants and soil from within the building. Plastic or glass sheeting used on hobby greenhouses act as a barrier to air flow. They also shield plants from severe weather conditions (such as hurricanes and rainstorms) and pests.

These greenhouses also have controlled micro-climates, which means that you can control the humidity, temperature, ventilation, etc. Plants require warmth and humid temperatures to survive. Since glass and plastic polycarbonate material is good at allowing sunlight to pass through, heat is contained within the greenhouse. This essentially translates into the fact that you are able to grow all manner veggies and flowers even during the coldest months, which is pretty cool (no pun intended) if you ask me.

To get started, I highly recommend you draw out the design and appearance of your beginner greenhouse on paper. Decide how you want to set up the walls and the roof. Once you have an idea in mind, you will be able to decide the type of greenhouse you want. Fortunately you can access everything you need to get started today by signing up for my comprehensive free 10 part mini-course on the subject.

If you have ever envisioned having a backyard greenhouse of your own but just aren’t quit sure how to go about it, I would like to help you understand how easy the process can be. Specifically I want to show you how to build a cheap greenhouse, or at least as cheaply as possible. Naturally we all want to save save as much money as we can when embarking on a project like this. So if you want to build a small greenhouse that will bring you joy (and of course delicious food) year round, why buy one when you can easily make one yourself? With the right set of plans, you can build a cheap and efficient greenhouse and save yourself a lot of dough!

Let’s face it, with the cost of staple foods (especially produce), going up in price on what seems like a daily basis, the idea of growing your own food is becoming more appealing for many people in today’s tight economic environment. Recently I asked my friend Tom, who has a wife and three kids, how much he typically spends on grocery’s per month (like most family’s, the majority of their shopping is done at a big chain store). He came up with a figure of 1000-1200 bucks on average. OK, then I asked how much of that was spent on just vegetables. He said about a quarter of that, so around 250-300 per month or 3000-3600 a year. And keep in mind, these are the prices for non-organic vegetables, which are typically 2-3x higher. It’s bad enough that produce sold at a typical grocery store costs this much. What’s even worse is spending that kind of money on genetically modified, pesticide ridden vegetables that taste like styrofoam!

When I told my friend that I could show him how to build a cheap greenhouse that would allow him to grow his own fresh, incredibly delicious, and completely organic produce at literally 1/20 the store price, he said one word…Sold. By the following weekend we had his 10×10 hoop greenhouse constructed, and I’m happy to report that the first rotation of summer veggies were in a salad his wonderful wife Jenny served at a recent dinner. This is a true story and like my friend Tom, I can show you how to build a cheap but effective greenhouse too.

Assuming you have some basic DIY skills and a couple of willing friends or family members to help out, the setup and completion of this project really shouldn’t take much longer than a weekend to finish. All it really consists of is PVC tubing, greenhouse plastic, and a little bit of 2×4 framing for the front wall and entry way. Seriously, it’s not that difficult.

All you need to do is sign up for my free 10 part mini-course and I’ll show you how to build a cheap greenhouse using the tried and true methods I’ve successfully employed for over 15 years as a professional gardener and nurseryman. In this mini-course I’ll show everything from how to select the proper location (this one of the most critical steps to greenhouse success), simple construction techniques, an easy to follow blueprint, ventilation, heating, and lighting considerations, and everything in between. I assure you that what I share with you in this course will allow you to make a cheap and fully functional greenhouse of your own in no time flat. So don’t wait and put it off any longer. If my friend Tom can do it so can you. And just like Tom’s family, you can be on your way to an amazingly inexpensive and sustainable method of food generation in no time!

If you are considering building a greenhouse to facilitate your green thumb, chances are you are unsure of where to get started on your project. After deciding the size and location of your new nursery, the next thing that you should always do is to determine the appropriate building material for the job.

While you may have seen many a glass greenhouse, the fact is that most modern structures are made of plastics such as polcarbonate. There are a variety of reasons for this change in building material when it comes to modern greenhouses, not the least of which having to do with the safety and durability of plastics as opposed to glass.

The fact of the matter is that glass is notoriously prone to breakage, especially when it is utilized in large sheets or panes, as would be the case in larger sized greenhouses. Being exposed to the elements, hot and cold, year-round and year after year only exacerbates the problem, and over time, greenhouses constructed out of glass have a tendency to have issues with breakage. This can be not only dangerous but also costly, and can even cause you to lose your infant plants should the breakage occur during the cold months and leave your budding crop unprotected from the elements.

Another issue that goes along with utilizing glass for as a greenhouse building material is overall cost, particularly if you are talking about a newly constructed building. The fact of the matter is that each individual pane is going to need a frame, which can end up being quite expensive, particularly when compared with materials such as plexi-glass or plastic sheeting, which work just fine simply being attached directly to the greenhouse frame. If you are not experienced in building these frames or installing glass, chances are you will have to hire a professional, which is another additional cost that most do-it-your-selfers generally strive to avoid.

Another common issue, which is often misunderstood, about using glass as the primary material of your greenhouse is that, contrary to what you may think, using a smokier or otherwise slightly tinted material instead allows for more even dispersion of the suns nurturing rays. This means that your plants may not get evenly distributed lighting if you use glass as your primary greenhouse architecture supply.

While this little drawback may not seem like a critical one, over the course of a growing season or even a pre-season, you may see a marked disparity in the way plants flourish or do not flourish depending on where they are located in your greenhouse.

All of the above being said, there are still those who will settle for nothing less than a traditional glass greenhouse. If you fall into this category, there are some things you should keep in mind. For example, to make your endeavor more economical, you may consider using scrap glass or recycled glass rather than buying it new. To increase safety, you tempered glass is an option (albeit and expensive one). Finally, to increase the efficiency of your glass, you may wish to consider tinted or smoky glass as an alternative to standard clear glass. This allows the light to pass through and be properly diffused.

Because your greenhouse is going so serve one primary purpose: to give you a climate-controlled environment suitable for growing the assorted plants of your choosing, it is vitally important that you take your individual needs and available resources into consideration before you begin to make your own greenhouse.

Such factors as the amount of space you need, what you are planning on growing, what type of greenhouse you want, and where you are going to put it are integral, and must be thoroughly worked out before hammer hits nail for the first time. Everything else is secondary. Once you have worked out the details, however, you will be ready to begin your garden greenhouse project.

One of the best ways to get ideas and gain an understanding of greenhouse design, layout, and implementation of such features as automatic watering, ventilation, and heating/cooling systems is to visit a few of your local garden centers and take a look around. Such field trips can give you invaluable insight into the project you are undertaking, and may also give you an opportunity to visit with other experts and maybe a hobby gardener or two. They can also give you an idea as to where you may want to situate your new greenhouse on your own property, in order to provide your plants with the appropriate levels of light year round.

Proper lighting is a critical aspect of a successful greenhouse, and therefore location and position are two factors that are taken into consideration with virtually every commercial greenhouse you will visit or see. Some ways to get the most out of your greenhouse’s location is to utilize any existing trees that you may have on your property to provide adequate shade in the summer and allow for proper sunlight to filter through in the winter. Deciduous tend to be ideal for this, while evergreens may actually be counterproductive and actually block necessary sunlight in the colder months when it is needed the most.

Where your greenhouse is located can also have an impact on the type of greenhouse that you build. For example, if you opt to build a lean-to greenhouse, it will actually share a wall with the exterior of your house. This can save you construction dollars, certainly, but it also comes with a new set of considerations and potential problems. For example, if your home casts a shadow onto your new greenhouse, you could lose invaluable sunlight (yet another reason why scouting the proper location is invaluable). However, many people who opt for lean-to style greenhouse buildings find that the potential benefits (such as proximity to utilities and water-sources, as well as cost-effectiveness) far outweigh the cons.

If you find that a lean-to greenhouse is not for you, your other option with regard to greenhouse construction is a free-standing option. These types of greenhouses tend to be larger, and have the added benefit of allowing light in from all sides (remember, a lean-to is restricted because it shares a wall with your home). Generally, a free-standing greenhouse is going to cost you a little more (depending on materials used), but can add exponential value to your property, and may provide you with just the environment you need to guarantee gardening success.

If you’ve decided to take on the construction of a greenhouse, you’ve got to be prepared to collect a few greenhouse supplies. Greenhouse composition is not created equally. Depending on what house you want in your backyard, you’re going to have to look in different places for the greenhouse supplies and equipment necessary to tackle this project.

As always, in order to even consider building your own greenhouse, you’ll have to know the type of plant you plan on growing. With this in mind, you can begin the hunt for your supplies. Consider what kind of greenhouse nursery supplies you’ll be enlisting. For the most part, you’ll certainly need soil or sand, different types of earthenware, and shelves on which to rest these pots. You’ll also have to consider what kind of pest control you’ll use –for the “green” thumb, you’ll want to search out an organic alternative to poisons that can not only harm the environment but damage your plant life. Perhaps you’ll need to invest in a soil testing kit and air purification mechanism. You’ll certainly need to look into different types of plant supports –depending on what you plan on growing you’ll need to vary the size and weight capacity of your supports.

Your greenhouse garden supplies will also vary, again, depending on what kind of plants you want to grow. For those who simply want to be guided throughout their greenhouse construction process, a garden house kit is perfect. It requires you to simply follow the instructions and have a bit of patience. The supplier of the kit you choose will provide the best products possible to make sure your greenhouse is of first class quality –including the best glazing material, automatic ventilation, top-notch framing, and possibly a way to assemble your greenhouse quickly without the use of a foundation.

For a more earth-friendly alternative to digging trenches in your garden, hydroponic gardening requires no soil and spreads water and nutrients directly to your plants’ roots. This option allows the gardener to grow significantly more with a fraction of the amount of water. Hydroponic supplies are spread all over the home-gardening market. All you have to do is find what’s suitable for your plants. The most popular are the passive system, ebb and flow, the nutrient film technique (NFT), and aeroponics. The passive system, being the most simple, allows your plants to sit directly in the nutrient solution, which is oxygenated with an air bubbler so the roots stay healthy. Ebb and flow makes use of a nutrient reservoir. The NFT utilizes sloping gutters and PVC pipes. Aeroponic systems use a very fine mist reaching the roots directly (as you see in the grocer when they water their produce). With the variety of systems out there, the product possibilities are astounding.

If you’re more hands-on, you’ll be able to find all the greenhouse supplies you’ll need at your local home supply store. Be prepared to by a range of supplies, especially as regards covering. Depending on your budget, you may want to go lo-fi and spring for a simple plastic cover. With as many alternatives as there are on the market, you’ll be using a variety of supplies to manage your plants and keep the earth a better place for gardeners everywhere.

If you’re one of the millions of people who have decided to take on your own backyard greenhouse, then you’ve got to know that there are virtually thousands of permutations therein. One of the many is the earth-sheltered solar greenhouse, which makes use of the two most natural and abundant resources this earth has: soil and sun.

As with most projects, it’s a good idea to now exactly what you’re getting yourself into. This type of greenhouse, also known as ‘underground greenhouses’ for their construction under a portion of the earth, are perfect for those folks who live somewhere where snow-filled days occur a substantial part of the year. With its composition, you’ll be able to get about a three to four month jump start on your growing season. These solar greenhouses are a better method than conventional greenhouses because they are incredibly heat-efficient, making use of glazing materials — glass and layers of various polyethylene materials– which allow a maximum amount of solar heat absorbed with minimum energy release.

Earth-sheltered greenhouses are based largely on the techniques of farmers who dig three-foot deep holes in the earth and fill them with three layers of organic materials. The first layer is fresh horse manure, the second is topsoil, and the third, simply one foot of space in which their plants can grow. The pit, known as a “grow-hole”, was covered with a storm window or some sort of other heavy glass material. The advantage of this, of course, is that it coveres plants from harsh winter weather as well as maintains a temperature of about 50 to 60 degrees year round. This heat is generated from the bottom layer of manure in concert with sunlight exposure.

Modern-day earth-sheltered greenhouses are still built in a “grow-hole”; however, at this point a more complex construction consists of a wooden base in the ground to substantially eliminate the prospect of exposing your plants to cold weather as you water them. The glass panel of before was simply laid on top of the plants, meaning that when the sun shifted direction in the spring, the amount of light reaching the plants was cut virtually in half. The modern greenhouse utilizes a glazed glass or plastic panels, angled so as to get the proper amount of sunlight and heat to your plants without having to rearrange everything as the seasons change.

The advantages of solar powered greenhouses heavily outweigh any disadvantages simply because their construction allows for the maximum amount of solar energy, something we’re all concerned with in this day and age in which alternative forms of energy are being heavily considered. There are two main permutations of this solar greenhouse: attached and freestanding. As you may have already guessed, an attached solar greenhouse utilizes the same basic construction of a lean-to attached to your house.

Being as they are of a smaller size, their use is more for limited amounts of produce. Freestanding greenhouses provide enough space to allow for greater production. To learn more about this type of greenhouse alternative, you should take a gander at the FREE-’Build A Greenhouse’ mini-course offered here on our site. It’s been a popular read with many self-made greenhouse aficionados the world over. This alternative greenhouse is probably the most efficient year-round greenhouse on the market. It sure beats having to reposition your house every season.

How to Build A Top Notch Lean-To Greenhouse

There are an abundance of greenhouses available for you to build. One of the most practical is a lean-to greenhouse. These smaller greenhouses make the perfect addition to any home and provide an exceptional alternative to traditional greenhouses that take days to build and are, quite frankly, a bit too expensive.

Building a lean-to greenhouse is slightly more complicated than building a hoop house. As with most projects you undertake, your first order of business is to know what kind of lean-to you want to create and where you want your greenhouse placed. For the sake of argument let’s assume you want to make an aluminum lean-to greenhouse. To save time and effort, for the most part these lean-tos come in their own kits which include the aluminum siding, a frame, roof vents, and polycarbonate panels. If one follows the instructions accordingly, he’ll have no problem attaching this aluminum greenhouse to the side of the house.

You also have the option of building a wooden lean-to greenhouse. You’ll of course need a sturdy wood for the wooden frame, hammer, nails, a saw of some sort to cut your wood to the proper proportions, and a covering –most likely, unfortunately, you’ll have to try for something sturdy enough to withstand harsh weather and fit inside a wooden frame. That means fiberglass.

To begin building your greenhouse, you’ll need to dig trenches to fit the planks of the foundation. Once you’ve set your foundation, begin the framing. You’ll then build your outside walls first and go from there –which entails building your roof framing and placing your covering on the house. The time put into building the foundation doesn’t necessarily have to be incredibly prolonged; however, setting a firm foundation will ensure that the remainder of your job will only take a couple of days –with a little help, of course.

Lean-to mini greenhouses, or hobby houses, are quite simple to construct. Aluminum or stainless steel framing is going to be the most expensive alternative; however, its durability makes up for this expense ten-fold. Again, for those who want all their lumber, aluminum, joints, and pieces in one area, there are hobby house kits. Be warned, these are rather expensive, and no matter how professional something is, price is an overwhelming influence on whether or not you get something professionally done or you bite the bullet and do it yourself.

When deciding what kind of lean-to greenhouse you want to construct, consider all the angles. You have to know how much everything is going to cost –tools, materials, siding, kits. Again, cost is a deciding factor in most do-it-yourself projects that people undertake. Also consider the weather. You’ll have to know if your greenhouse can withstand extreme weather –heat, snow, and rain. Always consider whether or not you want your greenhouse mobile –which would alleviate your need to monitor the weather. If you want your house stationary, your best bet is to build your greenhouse on the south-side of your house.

Greenhouse projects can be a lot of fun to work on and even more fun when they start yielding incredible veggies and flowers throughout the year. You can learn all about how to build your own little Garden of Eden by checking out the FREE-’Build A Greenhouse’ mini-course offered on this site. Remember, nothing is too complicated if you have the right spirit and some friends to help you out.

The road to making your own greenhouse is as smooth as silk. There couldn’t be anything easier than being environmentally conscious and growing your own produce with these quick and easy steps to building your own greenhouse using simple PVC greenhouse plans.

PVC greenhouses –also known as hoop houses, for their hoop shape– are simple in composition and require a limited amount of time. All you have to do is make sure that you have the right tools, a little patience, and perhaps a little help from your friends to get the job done properly.

PVC greenhouse design is fairly simple once you’ve got the essential elements together. You’ll have to acquire all the necessary materials, all of which can be purchased at any home supply store. Obviously your PVC greenhouse is going to need an ample amount of PVC pipes and fittings. You’ll also need screws, a hacksaw –for cutting the PVC piping to the proper length for each section of your house. You’ll need a tape measure, a utility knife, and a rubber mallet –to secure the PVC pipes snugly into their respective fittings. Lest we forget, you’ll need a covering for your greenhouse.

Ideally you’ll want to use a Visqueen-esque plastic covering. Greenhouse plastic, aptly named for its use in protecting greenhouse plants, easily tear when put to the test by the elements. So, for the sake of not having to replace your covering every season, use something other than greenhouse plastic. There are a number of PVC greenhouse products on the market, so be sure that the materials you get are the right ones for the size house you intend to build.

The build a PVC greenhouse you’ll need to be sure you know where you want your greenhouse situated and what size you want your house to be. Once you’ve figured out those dimensions, you’ll want to place stakes in the ground every 36 inches on both sides. Building the ridge way is, quite frankly, the most taxing job of the entire project; however, if you enlist the help of a couple friends, it’s nothing to be afraid of. Once you’ve gotten the proper lengths for your PVC piping, you’ll want to connect 10-foot lengths of ¾-inch PVC pipes to a PVC tee (named such because of its T-shape).

Once all your PVC pieces are connected, you’ll need to install the ridge way. This is where putting 2 ft. sections of rebar in the ground comes in. Place your ridge way on the stakes and your frame is complete. Once the frame is up, it’s time to add your plastic covering. To connect the plastic to the PVC you can buy yourself some large binder clips, enough to surround the entire house. For an added precaution to guard against inclement weather, place two 2X4s on either side of your hoop house. Before you can complain of arm cramps, you’ve built your house. Hoop houses take about an hour to construct, and with companions helping you out it should take no time at all.

Remember, the biggest part of this job is building your ridge way. Once you’ve succeeded in that task, you’ve basically built your greenhouse. To get a great set of PVC greenhouse plans for FREE you should check out the “Build A Greenhouse” mini-course that is offered on this site. Beyond that, congratulations! You’ve officially become your own contractor while keeping the planet green one vegetable at a time.

Not every greenhouse that’s out there has to make a grandiose statement about your desire to make the world a better place. Sometimes the best things come in the smallest packages, and sometimes you don’t want to burden yourself with the upkeep of a large, glass greenhouse. For the money conscious green thumb there are many alternatives to the traditional greenhouse.

How to build a small greenhouse, for example, is less of a chore and more of a hobby. The smaller the house, the less time you have to put into it to make sure that it’s structurally sound and can take care of your plants. Also small greenhouses offer the possibility of year-round mobility. Be careful, though. If you’re not sure that your hand is steady enough to handle this project, perhaps getting something with plenty of instructions and easily identifiable pieces would best fit you.

There are literally thousands of small greenhouse kits on the market. With everybody in a race to say they’re the greenest world citizen, it can be important to separate yourself from the crowd with a greenhouse that supplies your own small, well-running ecosystem. A kit saves you the effort of trying to find the necessary materials you need and attempting to build a house from scratch if you’re not prepared to do so. Be warned, my friend. Greenhouse kits are notoriously expensive. Costing upwards of $5000, sometimes it’s better to take a chance with a little help from your friends than to spend a small fortune on something that may require a great deal of assembly.

Mini greenhouses, or hobby houses, are perfect for someone who wants to rest seedlings in a portable greenhouse for the year. They can be made of virtually any durable substance –from aluminum, to wood, to polyvinyl. Aluminum hobby houses are perfect for attaching something to the side of your house. Wooden greenhouses are made sturdy enough to withstand inclement weather because of their structure having to sit in a trench in order to keep from moving; however, that being said, you can’t move this house around too often –unless you don’t mind digging trenches in your yard all year round– and wood, though the most diverse medium to build with, also can get punchy after too many thunderstorms.

If you’re the type to want to try and keep your greenhouse indoors, there are quite a few ideas for some very small greenhouses that even a child could construct. The most basic is the recycled soda bottle. Take a two liter bottle and cut in half across the middle. With the bottom half, put in your soil, seeds, and water. Then with some duct tape –or if you’re more crafty, a needle and heavy thread– close the top half of the battle back onto the bottom. Using the top as your water hole, you’ve got yourself a mini greenhouse. The ideas for very small greenhouses are almost endless.

When it comes to an economical and fun way to build a small greenhouse, it pays to have a bit of creativity and some ingenuity. If you use your own creative genius, you could not only begin to grow some very beautiful plants, by recycling you can keep the planet in good shape for a long time.

When considering what kind of greenhouse you’d like to construct, be conscious of what kind of greenhouse plans you’ll need. It’s a very easy step to take on your way to building the greenhouse of your dreams; however, it’s easy to forget that building anything takes step by step planning and concentration.

The easiest way to go is with a greenhouse kit. These kits vary in size, material, and cost. However, if you want to go the easy route and buy the kit to make your own greenhouse, keep in mind you’ll have to dish out a pretty penny. Even for the smaller hobby houses, kits can cost upwards of $5000. If you’re not willing to part with that kind of green (no pun intended), you’ll have to just suck it up, seek out your materials and tools, and build the greenhouse yourself.

Because there are so many types of greenhouses, never forget to decide what kind of house suits your needs. If you’re looking for cultivating your average fruit and vegetables, any greenhouse will do. Hoop houses are constructed so a wide variety of plants can flourish all year round. Lean-to houses make excellent additions to your house; however, the size and variety of what these houses can hold is very limited. Then again, if you’re the type to want to tackle a huge project, a warm weather greenhouse, suited for tropical plants, is the house for you.

Wooden greenhouse plans vary from all the aforementioned plans because usually you’re going to have to dig trenches in order for the wood to remain sturdy, wood is an exceptionally versatile medium with which to construct, and depending on the type of wood, the amount of wear and tear is substantially greater than aluminum and plastic, especially in inclement weather.

The details of your greenhouse plans vary greatly on where you’re going to locate your house and obviously the material with which you’re going to work. When considering making your own plans, you have to have a great eye for dimension. Though it’s not necessary that you be a rocket scientist, it’s important that at the very least you know the dimensions of your foundation. You’re going to also need to know the sizes of your lumber, aluminum, PVC piping, etc. in order to properly build your frames.

Taking a look at greenhouse blueprints is a huge help in construction of your own greenhouse. There are plenty of websites that offer you the luxury of their endless knowledge of greenhouse construction. These websites also offer a great deal of advice as to what kind of greenhouse you desire to add to your house. Don’t be afraid to ask questions at your local home supply store. Anyone worth their salt is going to point you in the right direction with regards to a quality greenhouse plan.

I can’t stress enough how important it is to know your boundaries. If you’re monetarily incapable of building a lavish greenhouse complete with fiberglass sidings don’t over extend yourself. A good greenhouse plan is easy to follow and the materials are easy to attain. There is actually a great set of easy to build greenhouse plans available on this site for FREE. So check out the ‘Build A Greenhouse’ mini-course we offer if you want to see how simple the process can be. And remember, it’s not a crime to be ambitious, but you want to make sure that your eyes aren’t bigger than your stomach –or your wallet.

It’s a noble endeavor, investing in your own greenhouse. You’re proving to yourself your skills as a handyman or woman while making the world a brighter shade of green. Keep in mind, however, building a greenhouse doesn’t mean breaking the bank in hopes of impressing the neighbors. I’m here to tell you that it is indeed possible to set-up a cheap greenhouse that works beautifully!

To be quite frank, the most cost-effective way to attain your very own inexpensive greenhouse is to buy the materials and build it yourself. However, in our unstable economic times, having the time on your hands to take on a construction project is practically non-existent. The last thing anyone wants to do is have to construct something by hand with no experience and no time; however, your biggest mistake would be to dish out substantial amounts of cash for a greenhouse kit. These things can run upwards of $5000 and involve a great deal of assembly.

For an alternative to manual labor and expensive greenhouse kits, there are plenty of low cost greenhouses. Why not try an EZ-Grow Greenhouse? At a market value of $489, this six-by-eight house grows plants at an accelerated rate because of its ability to trap sunlight and heat. The construction is basically a snap, yet the whole structure is rather durable, withstanding all manner of inclement weather. For the gardener interested in moving his greenhouse as seasons change, this house is also mobile with minimal wear and tear. A small search on the Internet will reveal hundreds of these cheap greenhouses that cost you a fraction of the do-it-yourself kits and require very little work on your end.

With so many greenhouse outlets online, there’s no telling how many cheap greenhouses are up for grabs. A word to the wise: discount doesn’t always mean quality. I’m not saying to completely disregard these bargain greenhouses; however, be reasonable. Though the idea is to stay green and still grow your year-round lot of fruits and vegetables on a budget, you still want to be sure that the house that you’re investing in is worth the cash you put up for it –no matter how inexpensive. Also take a gander at some used greenhouses.

As with anything that’s already been used, make sure that there isn’t a significant amount of damage. Find out how long the greenhouse has been in use and for what it was used. Used greenhouses could be just the answer you’re looking for, however, if you need something simple to construct and easy on your wallet. Don’t be fooled by the prospect of owning a brand new greenhouse. Sometimes there’s a product already tested and proven reliable around the corner for the fraction of the price. Remember, it’s up to you to do the legwork to find out what deals are out there.

When in the market to buy a greenhouse, you want to approach the process as you would anything else requiring you to let fly some of your hard-earned cash. Be sure you know what exactly it is you’re looking for. Know your produce –if you need a greenhouse that will sustain tropical plant life, be on the lookout for a warm-weather house. Most importantly, be smart. It’s easy to get caught up in the bargain hunt, but don’t let your guard down for the sake of saving a few pennies.

So, you’ve decided you want to build a greenhouse. At this point, you may be wondering what to do next. Well, I’ll tell you. Decide what type of greenhouse you want, gather your materials, and get started on building the frame for your greenhouse.

Keep in mind there are many greenhouse designs out there that may suit your needs. Whether you want it big, cold temperature, or a lean-to, your first priority is to the plant life you want to grow inside. For this particular occasion, we’re going to discuss a popular option in greenhouse construction: the cold frame greenhouse. These greenhouses are compact and lightweight, so mobility is never a problem.

For an idea of what you’ll be building, imagine a grill. Now imagine that grill is wooden and instead of housing coal, it houses soil and plant seeds. Next you’ll need to know what materials you need to build the greenhouse frame. Now, for the contractor who wants all his pieces in one place, you may opt to use a greenhouse frame kit. There are multiple kits out there, most of which make their frame from plastic or aluminum. To find out which greenhouse frame kit is right for you, do a little searching and you should find a kit for all types of plants –tropical and temperate climate fruits alike.

Now if you’re the type who likes to get your hands dirty, use power tools, hammers, and nails, then skip the greenhouse kit and get ready for some quick instruction. The construction of these greenhouses is fairly straightforward, depending on how much time you put into it. Firstly, you need to know what type of materials you’re working with.

You’ll need measuring tape, a power drill with assorted bits, a handsaw, a table saw, and clamps. You’ll also need various lengths of a certain type of timber (preferably cedar, redwood, or pressure-treated pine), plywood, rust proof head screws, a Plexiglas sheet, waterproof polyester glue, brass hinges and handles, a chain for the cover, sand, and soil. Keep in mind this list varies depending on what kind of project you’re doing. If you wish to construct a cold frame greenhouse of aluminum or plastic, the supplies you enlist will vary significantly.

To build the frame you’ll have to first get in mind the type of design you want for your greenhouse. Cut the wood and drill holes to fit in your screws. Once you’ve got the frame in mind, this should be a cinch. The success of your greenhouse frame relies heavily on what kind of wood you use and precise measurement. Pay close attention to your measurements and your cutting. Being even a tenth of an inch off will cause your frame to be faulty and your greenhouse will eventually collapse.

Now, be reasonable. If a cold frame greenhouse is too big of an endeavor, don’t put yourself out. As I said before, there are hundreds of greenhouse designs to choose from. Your first priority shouldn’t be how elaborate a greenhouse you construct, but how your fruits and vegetables will react to the environments in which you place them. Don’t be afraid to do a little digging (no pun intended) for the greenhouse that’s right for you.

Looking for an easy way to stay green? Designing a greenhouse is quick and simple –two words that many search for when trying to keep up with the new trend that’s got everyone wearing green. There are quite a few greenhouse designs out there, some more complex than others, but all of them are pretty comprehensive once you’ve got the general framework understood.

Some of the best laid greenhouse design plans require a little ingenuity on your part; however, once you’ve built the main foundation, you’re well on your way to growing fresh fruits and veggies, in the process of making the world a greener place. First, always know what type of greenhouse you have in mind. Because there are virtually hundreds to choose from, you need to know the basics: what temperature do you want your greenhouse? Do you want it big, small, or medium? Will you be building a lean-to, detached, or ridge and furrow connected house? Perhaps you’d like a hoop house?

Something else to consider is what kind of flora you want to produce in your greenhouse. Certain plants thrive better in certain greenhouses. For instance, a hoop house is perfect for growing vegetables. A hot greenhouse is specific for tropical fruits and plants. Seedlings or plants that thrive in cooler conditions are best reserved for cool temperature greenhouses. The first and biggest step to greenhouse design, is knowing exactly what plants you want to grow and how big you want to go in size and production.

Learning how to design a greenhouse is a snap, especially if you’re good at following directions. The basic construction of a greenhouse usually requires a couple dozen multi-sized PVC pipes. You’ll need a hacksaw and tape measure to accurately size your PVC pipes for the project. You’ll need some sort of joint –PVC tee and cross connectors are perfect for constructing the joints of a hoop house, for instance. Besides the foundation you’ll, of course, need a covering.

The most effective covering is made of some sort of glass –especially for hot greenhouses used for storing tropical plants. However, glass is rather expensive, heavy, and fragile. If it has to be glass, fiberglass is the least expensive of this option. Another choice that’s slightly less effective, but less expensive and less of a hassle is plastic covering. It’s less effective because plastic tends to rip in inclement weather; however, depending on if your greenhouse is mobile or stationary, plastic is easier to deal with and should hold for at least five years. When choosing what kind of plastic to use, go for a Visqueen-type plastic –Visqueen being a brand name. Though its namesake, greenhouse plastic is most prone to wear and tear when the weather gets to rocking and rolling.

There are literally hundreds of thousands of sites on the net willing to give you step-by-step instructions in the art of greenhouse design. All you have to do is be willing to put in the legwork to find the specific instructions that fit your needs. Remember, the type of greenhouse you want in your backyard is completely up to you. Be as conventional or as creative as you want. Who knows, you could get yourself a show on HGTV as the Next Greenhouse Designer.

So, you want to get in on the latest trend to hit the celebrity circuit? Now that saving the planet is en vogue, it’s time you took some matters into your own hands and added your own personal touch to the fight for environmental revitalization. Do your part to save this big rock we call home. How-build a greenhouse, that would be an excellent start!

While learning how to build a greenhouse can seem arduous, the fact remains it can be as easy as cutting a plastic bottle in half. If you’re more of the type who desires growth on a much larger scale, there are a plethora of options. There are your traditional hot greenhouses, hoop houses, lean-tos; the list practically endless. It’s important to know what it is you plan to grow. This will temper your decision of what kind of greenhouse suits your needs. Then, of course, you’ll have to find the perfect place to set your greenhouse and decide whether you want it mobile or stationary all year.

For the sake of saving money, your best going for building materials that can either be easily found at home or can be purchased for reasonable prices at home improvement stores. This means that while you’re on your quest to make your own greenhouse, understand that it’s not required that you spend exorbitant amounts of cash to get the desired result. Speaking in terms of greenhouse makeup, you’ll notice that there are dozens of choices. The most effective greenhouses use glass to cover the frame; however, who has the cash for that sort of lavish construction? The truth is, plastic covers are just as effective, they’re lightweight, and most importantly, they cost a fraction of the price of fiberglass or plate.

Another thing to keep in mind is that it can be to your advantage to not try to build a greenhouse on your own. While we all want the pleasure of knowing that we created our own architectural masterpiece, the truth is the job is much easier and time-effective if done with a partner or a group of friends –needless to say, it tends to be a more pleasant experience if you can laugh with your friends while assembling the frame of your greenhouse.
Let’s not forget that the main reason for building a greenhouse is to grow your own organic foods while keeping the earth clear of rubbish and pollutants.

To be sure that your greenhouse construction is both earth-friendly and effective, pay close attention to the materials you use. Be sure that anything used in the construction of your greenhouse is recyclable or reusable. With any sort of tubing or pipe, be sure to get as much use out of it as possible. And, I know I don’t have to say it, but please clean yourself up after that.

Building your own garden greenhouse need not be a loathsome chore. It can be as fun or as serious as you make it. Remember you are among the many who want to preserve the earth’s beauty.
